“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8).
As new creations in Christ Jesus we are not called to obey the Ten Commandments. That’s not what Christianity is about, for we’re in a new dispensation in God’s scheme of things; we don’t function by the Law, but by the faith that works by love. God knowing how impossible it is to live under the Law in the Old Testament abolished it (Ephesians 2:5), and gave us a new law—the law of love!
How delightful to know that I don’t need to strive to fulfill the Ten Commandments, let alone the entire Law! There’s a new Law I’m operating in and that law covers every other law, for when you walk in love, you have fulfilled the law: “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law” (Romans 13:10).
If you had the opportunity of asking Peter, John, Paul or any of those who lived under the Law before receiving the gospel of Jesus Christ, they’ll tell you it’s great to be free from the Law and its commandments. It’s not fun constantly trying to remember to observe the Ten Commandments or any of the other laws given to the children of Israel in the books of Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers, knowing that each one of them carried a stiff penalty for anyone that defaulted.
Today, you don’t need to be reminded to do God’s will, that’s what your life is all about, that’s what you live for, and that’s because you love Him. And you love Him because He first loved you. you’re not doing the things you do because you’re being compelled by some laws; you’re doing them because you love Him!
All God seeks to do is bring you to the knowledge of the depth and magnitude of His love in your heart, so you can operate fully in this new law of love.
Prayer
Dear Father, I pray that you cause my roots to go down deep in the soil of your marvellous love and help me understand the depth, magnitude and power of your love, and to experience it in all its fullness, in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
