Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:5-8).
Humility is a hallmark of those who’re full of the Spirit. It doesn’t matter how mature you think you are in Christ, the measure of your humility is the true gauge of your spiritual maturity.
Remember that even though Jesus was the Son of God, He didn’t live with heavenly power on earth; He lived as a man. The Bible called Him “the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). He felt pain, hunger and tiredness. He ate food and slept like a normal human being. All these He did as a result of His humility. The Bible says He was tempted in all points like we are, yet was without sin (Hebrews 4:15). If it wasn’t possible for Jesus to fall into temptation, He would not have been tempted, because it wouldn’t be a bona-fide temptation.
Even though He was co-equal with God, Jesus humbled Himself and surrendered Himself to a most horrific and humiliating death on the cross. Remember when He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, He said “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt (Matthew 26:39). His humility caused Him to be obedient to God’s will; showing us a pattern to follow—that we ought to live a life of absolute humility.
Humility is a virtue that makes you submissive to God without questioning His authority. The Bible says God resists the proud and gives more grace to the humble (1Peter 5:5). When you’re humble as Jesus is, you’ll not seek to do your own will but the will of God. You’ll not make plans first and ask God to bless them; instead you’ll find out from God what He wants from you and plan with Him. Pride which is the opposite of humility causes a man to live a selfish life and destroys him at the end.
Follow the example of Christ and let your humility be spoken of, for humility is the pathway to greatness.
Confession
Godly reverence and humility are hallmarks of my life because I’m yielded to the Holy Spirit. Pride, arrogance and irreverence for spiritual things are not a part of my life for I’ve learnt from God’s Word to embrace the right attitudes through the power of the Holy Spirit.
